"The best compete with themselves. The rest compete with each other." - Herman Steenkamp
Envy.
Jealousy.
Making comparisons.
The culture of one-upmanship.
Of feeling superior to your peers.
Yearning to be praised and revered.
Wishing that we looked a certain way.
Wishing we had a certain skill.
Wishing that we possess certain material goods.
These are all desires of the ego.
A culture created by the modern day society.
A culture which lives on the surface level.
Your worth judged on what you can offer externally.
A misguided view of life.
A life dedicated to getting the upper-hand.
When really, the only person we should be competing with is ourselves.
The person you were in the past.
The person you were last year.
The person you were yesterday.
The person you were one minute ago.
This is the only person who you need to compete with.
To be better than.
To compare yourself to.
To get the upper-hand on.
To improve upon.
To grow from.
The only person you have something to prove to is yourself.
Strive to live, live to strive.
